UL is the abbreviation of Underwriter Laboratories Inc. UL Safety Testing Institute is the most authoritative organization in the United States and also the largest civil organization engaged in safety testing and identification in the world. It is an independent, non-profit, professional institution that conducts experiments for public safety. Unlike FCC certification, UL certification is safety certification. UL is mainly engaged in product safety certification and operating safety certification business. Its ultimate purpose is to obtain goods with a relatively safe level for the market and make contributions to ensuring personal health and property safety. In the United States, UL is a symbol of safety signs for consumers. Globally, UL is one of the most trusted qualified evaluation providers for manufacturers.
UL 2054 is the UL safety standard for household and commercial batteries issued on November 17, 2021. These requirements cover portable primary (non rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) batteries used as product power supplies. For battery packs with two or more batteries in series or in parallel.
UL 2054 certification scope
1.1 UL 054 certification requirements cover portable primary (non rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable) lithium-ion batteries used as commercial power supplies. These lithium-ion batteries are composed of a single electrochemical battery or two or more lithium-ion batteries connected in parallel or series or both. They convert chemical energy into electrical energy through chemical reaction.
1.2 UL 054 certification requirements are designed to reduce the risk of explosion or fire when lithium ion batteries are working in the equipment. The correct use of these lithium-ion batteries in specific applications depends on their use in complete products that meet the requirements applicable to such products.
1.3 UL 054 certification requirements are intended to cover lithium ion batteries for general use. They do not include the combination of lithium-ion batteries and host products, which are covered by the specifications in the host product standards.
1.4 UL 054 certification requirements also aim to reduce the risk of personal injury caused by fire or explosion when lithium ion batteries are removed from products to be transported, stored or discarded.
1.5 UL 054 certification requirements do not cover the risk of toxicity caused by ingestion of lithium-ion batteries or their contents, nor the risk of injury to personnel if lithium-ion batteries are opened to provide access to their contents.
UL 2054 certified test items
1. Electrical performance test: short circuit test, overcharge test, abuse overcharge test, over-discharge test, power limiting source test;
2. Mechanical test: extrusion test, collision test, acceleration test, vibration test;
3. Battery pack shell test: drop impact test, 250N static test, mold pressure release test, fire baking test, projectile test;
4. Environmental test: high temperature test, temperature cycle test, etc.
